We invest in highly efficient and automated systems for the recycling of batteries. For this purpose, a completely new recycling route is under construction at the Meppen site, which is optimally designed to meet the high requirements of lithium battery recycling.
Viable battery recycling: Efficient, safe and eco-friendly
By the end of 2024, we will have built one of the most modern recycling sites for lithium batteries in Germany. The recycling plant developed by a renowned German plant manufacturer relies on state-of-the-art technologies and can be flexibly deployed to recycle different battery designs. The process route will feature a capacity of up to four tonnes per hour, with an exceptionally high recycling efficiency of up to 96 percent. Furthermore, it is planned to operate the plant entirely with renewable electricity from a local wind turbine and with its own photovoltaic systems in order to reduce the carbon footprint of the recyclate to a minimum.
Recycling route processes:
- The deeply discharged and dismantled lithium-ion batteries pass through a sluice system, since the work processes are carried out in an encapsulated area kept inert under nitrogen atmosphere.
- The batteries are then shredded by a multi-shaft rotary shredder.
- The shredded material is fed fully automatically to a drying unit where the electrolytes are evaporated and then condensed and recovered.
- The black mass is separated from the remaining components in a special sieve system.
